My discipline system is based on a series of positive and negative consequences for behavior. Students earn either a first down or a 10-yard penalty based on their behavior. The consequence doled out to each student depends on where they end their day. It is possible for students to earn several first downs or 10-yard penalties in one day. The goal of all students is to land in the touchdown zone. This discipline system is tied to our Classroom Economy (see tab for more information on our Classroom Economy).
Touchdown-earn $20.00 for the classroom economy
Red Zone-all students start the day here and earn $5.00
20 yards-lose $20.00 and 10 minutes of recess
30 yards-lose $30.00 and whole recess
40 yards-lose $40.00, whole recess, and parent contact
50 yards-lose $45.00, whole recess, parent contact and sent to principal
**Student can lose more than 10 yards at a time, based on the infraction.
**Disclaimer: Yes, I know that technically the "red zone" is the first 20 yards from the endzone! :)
Example:
Jackson starts the day in the Red Zone. Around 9:00, he begins talking when he was told to work on his own. The teacher then gives him a 10 yard penalty. Jackson moves from the Red Zone to the 20 yard line. Later that day, he speaks disrespectfully to another student. Jackson earns another 10-yard penalty and moves to the 30 yard line. At the end of the day, Jackson now owes his whole recess and loses $30.00 of our class money.
The next day Jackson starts in the Red Zone. He has a really good day, and, in fact, earned a first down for helping a classmate when they spilled the contents of their pencil box. At the end of the day, Jackson has earned $20.00!
The third day starts as the other two, in the Red Zone. Jackson again talks when he should be working and earns a 10-yard penalty. Later that morning, Jackson redeems himself and is hard at work while others are talking around him (even though they should be working). The teacher notices this and gives Jackson a first down. As the day ends, Jackson is back in the Red Zone and earns $5.00!
